Images can be uploaded to Contensis in various formats, however the Image API only supports delivery of a subset of image types.
The Image API supports the delivery of the following formats.
| Format | Extensions | Transformations | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPEG | .jpg, .jpeg, .jfif | Yes | |
| PNG | .png | Yes | Transparency is kept. |
| GIF | .gif | Yes | |
| Animated GIF | .gif | No | Delivered unchanged, whatever parameters are given, so the animation is kept. |
| WebP | .webp | Yes | An animated WebP is transformed as its first frame. |
| TIFF | .tif, .tiff | Yes | Delivered as WebP, as most browsers cannot display TIFF. Request format=tiff to keep it. A multi-page TIFF is transformed as its first page. |
| BMP | .bmp | Yes | Delivered as PNG. |
| SVG | .svg | No | Delivered unchanged. An SVG is a vector image and scales without the Image API. |
Size limits
Two limits apply to the source image when it is transformed:
- File size, 50MB.
- Frame size, 50 megapixels. This is the width multiplied by the height, so a 60 megapixel photograph is above the limit however small its file is.
An image beyond either limit is not transformed. Neither limit applies to the original: requesting an image without any transformation parameters returns the file that was uploaded, whatever its size.
Upload images at a size suited to the web and use the Image API to produce smaller versions of them, rather than uploading camera originals and relying on transformations.
