Update a campaign

You can change a campaign's settings at any time, although what you are allowed to change narrows once the campaign starts running. You need the Update action on the Campaigns permission. Without it, Edit campaign does not appear.
Update a campaign
- Open the campaign from the campaigns listing.
- Select Edit campaign. The Edit campaign window opens with the current settings filled in.
- Change whatever you need to.
- Select Save changes.
The window closes and the campaign page updates.
To leave without saving, select Cancel or the close button.
Renaming a campaign does not change its campaign ID
The UTM Campaign ID is generated from the campaign name only when the campaign is first created. Renaming afterwards leaves the campaign ID exactly as it was.
That is deliberate, and it is the safe behaviour. Your campaign links already carry the campaign ID, so silently changing it would break them. But it does mean a renamed campaign ends up with a campaign ID that no longer matches its name, which is worth a note somewhere your team will see it.
Changing the UTM Campaign ID
You can edit the tracking ID directly. When you do, Contensis shows a warning:
The warning stays visible until you save, cancel, or put the original value back.
Take that warning seriously on a campaign that is already running. Every response collected so far carries the old tracking ID. A campaign counts responses that carry its current tracking ID, so changing it means none of those responses match any more, and the campaign's figures fall away across every tracked item at once.
There are two further consequences on a live campaign:
- Links already in circulation stop being attributed. Anything you have sent out carries the old ID, so responses arriving from those links are no longer counted towards this campaign
- The old ID is released. It is not kept as an alias, and a future campaign can take it
Nothing is deleted, though, and the change can be undone. Campaign figures are worked out from the responses that exist rather than held as a stored total, so changing the campaign ID does not destroy anything. The responses keep their context, including the old campaign value. Put the original campaign ID back and the figures return, including any responses that arrived while the ID was changed.
The safe approach is to settle the campaign ID before the campaign goes live. Changing it afterwards is recoverable, but it will make the campaign's reporting inconsistent for as long as it is wrong, and it invalidates every link already out in the world.
Reusing a campaign ID that an earlier campaign has given up is safe. A campaign only counts responses collected inside its own date range, and a new campaign always starts in the future, so it cannot pick up responses that an earlier campaign collected under the same ID.
What you cannot change once the campaign has started
The date range locks in stages, so the position depends on the campaign's status.
| Status | Dates |
|---|---|
| Upcoming | Both dates can be changed |
| Active | The start date is fixed. Start date cannot be changed for an active campaign |
| Ended | Both dates are fixed. Campaign dates cannot be changed when a campaign has ended |
The name, campaign ID, primary goal, and owner can be changed at any point.
Validation
Clearing a required field and trying to save keeps the window open and shows the problem against the field:
- Campaign name is required
- UTM Campaign ID is required
- Date range is required
- Start date must be before end date
- A campaign already exists with the given name.
