Contensis has won its first continental European contract, adding yet another university to its ever-growing higher education portfolio.
The industry-leading web Content Management System has been selected to be used for the renovation of the European University Institute’s web site and Intranet.
The European University Institute is based in Firenze (Florence, Italy) and is an international educational doctoral and post-doctoral teaching and research institution covering the subject areas of Political & Social Sciences, Economy, Law and History, and is recognised as being quite unique throughout the World.
The EUI was founded in 1972 by the European Community Member States to provide advanced academic training to PhD students and to promote research at the highest level. The establishment of a teaching and research institution for the first time on a European level was agreed by the Member States, after a long series of negotiations and this saw the setting- up of the European University Institute, with its seat in Florence.
The main university is situated within the wonderful ancient Badia Fiesolana which was the original cathedral of Fiesole, dating from the 11th century. The buildings are nestled in the hills overlooking Florence giving away the most beautiful of views.
The institute had an established web site with approximately 11,000 pages made in HTML using Dreamweaver. The goal was to acquire and implement a web content management system which would increase user friendliness, improve on the visibility, and provide more control with all the benefits of an Enterprise CMS.
Contensis was chosen as their provider after a long selection process, with the Contensis team reaping the benefits of trips to the beautiful city of Florence!
Mark Owen, university sector specialist commented that the EUI was yet another prestigious client joining what is already an impressive list.
‘’Our University user group will also be happy with this result as meetings are held in turn at our university client sites, so we should all be looking forward to EUI hosting an event for us!’’

About the company
The Contensis Enterprise Content Management suite of products began life, as many products do, following an animated discussion between a group of software professionals back in the autumn of 1998.
They all agreed, after exhaustive evaluation, that most of the products then available fell far short of their own vision and an idea began to gel. By spring 1999 work was well advanced on the specification of a system which not only met their criteria, and that of respected industry analysts, but equally important also reflected the views of end user enterprises. Power, ease of use and cost effectiveness were the key words. The beginnings of the Contensis development team were spawned a little later and work started in earnest to turn the dream into reality.
Philosophy
Our approach is completely customer-centric. Customers are our universe and we see their problems as our problems.
From a software perspective this means that we strive to ensure that every aspect of Contensis is simple to learn and easy to use. We believe we've achieved that, certainly at everyday user level. Even newcomers to the system are normally editing and contributing within minutes.
It's all part of our 'How can we make it simpler' approach.
